Diving in Honduras, a coral reef paradise

Just off Honduras’ spectacular Caribbean coast lie the Bay Islands, a group of six main islands with a large number of small cays, making which make Honduras a paradise fordiving enthusiasts. Are you up for diving in Honduras and discovering the treasures hidden in its waters? You’ll be stunned by its incredible coral reefs.

To the north of Honduras lies the Caribbean Sea and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world, which runs along the coasts of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. This makes Honduras an outstanding destination for diving enthusiasts. With some of the most amazing marine life anywhere in the world, divers will find coral reefs, colourful tropical fish and the famous whale shark (one of the largest fish in the world).

Útila, a diver’s paradise

The white sandy beaches and warm, crystal-clear waters make Útila an ideal destination for enjoying the wonders of the deep. In 2017 the island, one of the Bay Islands, was declared a Marine Reserve by UNESCO. It’s also famous as a place where you can spot large shoals of sharks all year round, and even swim with them.

Guanaja. More than just diving

In this old hideaway for Spanish and English pirates dotted with shipwrecks, as well as doing some diving, you can also go snorkelling, take out a kayak and enjoy the local cuisine. The inland part of the island also has wild treasures to offer, with waterfalls where you can take a dip and paths leading down to the sea through thick tropical forests.

West Bay, Roatán

West Bay is a natural beach with stunning white sands and aquamarine water, which every May hosts the Caribbean Cup, an international freediving competition that attracts intrepid sports people to the area thanks to the special conditions of its waters.

Cayos Cochinos, a pristine sea bed

Lying just a few kilometres from La Ceiba, Cayos Cochinos, or Cochinos Cays are a key attraction for adventurous travellers. This small group of islands is made up of Cayo Mayor and Cayo Menor as well as three smaller coral cays. Hondurans consider it to be the best place for diving anywhere in the country. Its waters are a protected marine reserve and its coral reefs form part of the second largest reef system in the world.
