What is handling?

The term handling is the colloquial name for an aviation term called Aircraft ground handling. It involves all the possible services an aircraft needs while being on the ground. This service is usually provide by the airlines or by an outsourcing airport services.

In Air Europa we had been doing handling for the past 25 years. In fact, we were one of the first Spanish company to provide this service. The service started to be offer in 1988 on Son Sant Joan Airport. Mallorca was exceling as a tourist destination and the company decided to buy the equipment to do handling.

The service and its program was created by Miguel Gómez Juan Carlos Rodríguez and Rafael Llompart. In 1989, Air Europa stared providing the service also in Gran Canaria. Finally in 1999 the company took over all the airports and handling all its own aircrafts.

Now that we know the story of handling in Spain and what it is, let’s take a look on what are the main categories of it:

Cabin and Catering

This category involves cleaning the cabin of the airplane, drain the lavatory, and replenishment of on-board consumables or washable items such as soap, pillows, tissues and blankets. It involves providing counter services, luggage handling, and services for special needs passengers or minors traveling without parent supervision. Also, handling services innerving on services for VIP passenger and passenger lounges.

Besides, all this catering is a main service. Handling include everything from preparing the food to taking out the empty containers at the end of a flight and cleaning the kitchen.

Air Cargo and Luggage

Handling means also taking care of the passenger luggage from the counter to the airplane, and from the airplane to the luggage claim area. Air cargo handling, usually by means of cargo dollies, and cargo loaders.

Ramps and Fingers

Handling is also a services that provides ramps, stairs and fingers to the airplanes on the airports. It includes guiding the aircraft into and out of the parking position, checking the craft tires and external appearance, towing with pushback tractors, load and unload the plane, and communications. All in a record time and always with a high quality services.
